Euro-zone economy grinds to halt even before Russia sanctions bite

Euro-zone economic growth ground to a halt in the second quarter as Germany's economy shrank and France's stagnated.
The zero growth, reported today by statistics agency Eurostat, was cause for alarm throughout the 18-nation region, which is already bracing for the impact of sanctions imposed on and by Russia over Ukraine.
Germany, Europe's largest economy, contracted by 0.2 percent in the quarter, undercutting Bundesbank forecasts that gross domestic product would be unchanged. Foreign trade and investment were notable weak spots, the German Statistics Office said. ...

Brenda Wood, a Kansas City-area businesswoman, was charged with defrauding TARP recipient Farmers Bank, announced the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program.  Wood was charged with five counts of bank fraud, one count of theft from an employee benefit program, and four counts of willful violations of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

Modest Gains Expected in U.S. Producer Prices On Friday, the Labor Department will release Producer Price Index data for July. Although the drop in the unemployment rate and accelerating economic growth in the second quarter have prompted fears of renewed inflation, most experts expect this report to be tame. The consensus calls for a 0.2 percent rise in the index, which is below the 0.4 percent gain for June.
