Weekend Reading: The Business of Being a Bank The weight of tens of billions of dollars in legal costs may be coming to an end for Bank of America, allowing the bank to turn its attention back to, as DealBook reported, "the business of being a bank."

For Brian T. Moynihan, the bank's chief executive, that means keeping his focus on extracting profit (helped by consumer spending and investment banking), cutting costs (25,000 jobs were cut in 2013) and appeasing shareholders (the bank announced an increase in its dividend on Wednesday).

The bank's stock rose slightly after news broke this week that a tentative mortgage settlement of more than $16 billion had been reached. But it then remained nearly static at $15.07 a share on Friday afternoon. The business of being a bank has its challenges.
