FINANCIAL & FOREX INFO NEWS I | Rudd's Response to Leak this Morning....| The Capital Circle

Capital Circle Newsletter

"I don't, frankly, give a damn about this sort of thing
In London, Wikileaks boss Julian Assange has been arrested and jailed while in Brisbane, Kevin Rudd is under the spotlight.

First off: WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange has been jailed in London after being arrested on a warrant based on four counts of alleged sexual assault committed in Sweden. The 39-year-old Australian was refused bail after a British judge ruled that there was a danger he might flee the country because the judge felt he had weak links to the UK and access to large amounts of money and support through his activity with the whistleblowing website. (more from Peter Wilson and Paul Maley)
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd confirmed this morning that Mr Assange had contacted the Australian consulate in London and asked for support and that Australian officials had subsequently attended his appearance in court.
But it's target Rudd in cables published this morning: THE US regards the Foreign Affairs Minister, Kevin Rudd, as an abrasive, impulsive ''control freak'' who presided over a series of foreign policy blunders during his time as prime minister, according to a series of secret diplomatic cables. The scathing assessment, detailed in messages sent by the US embassy in Canberra to the secretaries of state Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton over several years, are among hundreds of US State Department cables relating to Australia obtained by WikiLeaks and made available exclusively to the Herald. Mr Assange has accused the Gillard government of trying to "shoot the messenger" because the government does not want the truth revealed about its diplomatic and political dealings. (Philip Dorling reports)
Rudd's reponse to the leak this morning: "I don't, frankly, give a damn about this sort of thing, you just get on with it".
Assange's plea: WIKILEAKS deserves protection, not threats and attacks. In 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide's The News, wrote: "In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that
