Don't miss these top stories:
I tried an iPad the other day. I loved it. But am I going to buy one, either for myself or my college-aged teenager? Not likely. While my daughter has the apparently requisite iPod (my husband and I share one and call it the we-pod), our family has yet to even jump into the smart-phone market, so unless we can start using the iPad like a phone, it's not on the back-to-school list.

Watch our video today for a few tips on how to choose the right tech tool for your college student, plus see what options are available now, post-CARD-Act, to students seeking access to credit.

In fact, our own back-to-school list is blank right now. Maybe it's because my daughter is 19 now, so I'm not involved in her clothes shopping, but other than some textbook purchases that my daughter did online (stay tuned for our story coming Wednesday about the pros and cons of renting rather than buying textbooks), we've avoided the stores entirely this year. At least, in terms of back-to-school shopping. At least, so far. Of course, school doesn't start for a few more weeks.

Back-to-school shopping on credit? It's less likely

Five international closed-end funds for dividends

With many economists forecasting a weak U.S. economy for at least another year, this may be the right time to consider international markets. While there are plenty of exchange-traded-funds targeting foreign stocks, only a few pay significant dividends. Accordingly, for dividend investors closed-end funds may offer better opportunity.

The biggest lie about U.S. companies

Commentary: Politics threaten economic recovery

Anything that can go wrong with this economy is doing so. Double-dip or not, the U.S. economy is not in good shape. The second quarter's figures on the gross domestic product show that economic activity slowed markedly from the first quarter's clip, whose growth rate, in turn, was well below that of the fourth.

Commentary: What does $251 million get you? Compromise

Trading may have been slow on Wall Street in the first half of the year, but there's one place where investment dollars were flowing at a record pace: Washington.
